The $20 lie detector.

A dashboard with no warning lights might mean a healthy car — or a car whose memory was wiped this morning. A basic OBD-II scanner tells you which.

What the port under the dash knows

Every gas car sold in the U.S. since 1996 has an OBD-II diagnostic port, usually under the steering column. A basic scanner — a cheap plug-in unit or a Bluetooth dongle paired with a phone app — reads the car's own self-diagnosis: current trouble codes, pending codes, and the state of its emissions self-tests.

The oldest trick: clear the light

Any scanner can also erase codes — which turns off the check-engine light instantly. A seller with something to hide clears the codes an hour before your visit; the dash looks clean, the problem is still there, and the light returns a week after you've paid. You cannot catch this by looking at the dashboard. You catch it with the next card.

Readiness monitors — the tell

After codes are cleared (or the battery disconnected), the car must re-run its internal self-tests over many miles of varied driving — until then, those tests report "incomplete" or "not ready." So: a car whose monitors show mostly incomplete has had its memory wiped recently. There are innocent explanations (a genuinely new battery) — but "innocent" is the seller's claim to prove, not yours to assume.

How to actually do it

Before the test drive, ask to plug in — a seller who refuses a 30-second read on a car they claim is healthy has answered a different question. Read three things: stored codes (current faults), pending codes (faults brewing but not yet lit), and the monitor status. Photograph the screen. Codes present? Look up what they mean before price talk. All monitors incomplete? Ask when and why the battery was last out.

What a clean scan does NOT prove

Skeptic's honesty: OBD-II sees what the car's sensors see — mostly engine, transmission and emissions. It knows nothing about rust, crash repair, flood history, worn brakes or a failing wheel bearing. A clean scan with complete monitors removes one specific lie from the table. It does not replace the physical inspection or an independent mechanic's eyes.

Worth owning either way

The same tool keeps paying after you buy: when a light comes on, you read the code yourself before the repair shop tells you what it is — which changes that conversation the same way knowing the recall list changes the dealership one. It's the rare purchase that makes you harder to mislead twice.
